TIPS on ATTRACTING HUMMINGBIRDS to YOUR BACKYARD
Hummingbirds are extremely loyal to feeding sites. A hummingbird that feeds in your yard one year will return to that feeder the next. If you aren't attracting as many hummers as you want, read on! As the male Ruby-Throated Hummingbird is so territorial, one key is to offer lots of feeder. We have a dozen different kinds. No matter what kind of feeder you decide to use, remember two Golden Rules- KEEP THE FEEDER CLEAN and THE NECTAR FRESH. Hummingbirds keep their distance from fermented nectar. Fermented nectar can support growth of deadly molds.
Come in to see us for a list of plants that will help you attract, and keep the hummers in your yard and not your neighbors!!!
WHAT to DO
-Apply horticultural oil to fruit and ornamental trees that had, mite, aphid, and scale problems last year.
-Plant peas, carrots, onions, spinache, lettuce, and other cole crops now.
-Prune roses when flower buds of Forsythia begin to show yellow.
-Clean up perennial beds, cut down old stems of perennials, add Espoma Plant-tone, add fresh mulch.
-Apply crabgrass preventer to lawn BEFORE Forsythia blossoms drop.
-Plan your gardens & start thinking warm.
-Grubs will soon be active, start thinking grub control.
-Set up a rainbarrel to catch run-off from your roof. The more water you recycle the smaller your water bill will be.
